Charles William Sutter, an international oil and gas attorney whose kindness and caring spirit had a profound and lasting impact on all who knew him, passed away May 6 at the age of 62. Charles is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Brandon and Derrick; grandchildren, James and Matthew; his mother, Hazel; and brothers, Max and David.<BR><BR>Charles was born Aug. 8, 1948, to Hazel Mae Fronk and Robert Maxwell Sutter in Tulsa, OK.<BR><BR>While obtaining a bachelor’s degree in physiology and an MBA from Oklahoma State University, Charles was named to Sigma Nu Fraternity’s honorary Alpha Chapter. He later attended the University of Tulsa College of Law and clerked for the Oklahoma Supreme Court. <BR><BR>Charles then embarked on a distinguished career as an attorney with Mobil Oil and later Exxon Mobil Corporation that took him around the world. Charles represented Mobil in arbitration proceedings over oil interests in Prudhoe Bay and later was Senior Counsel in Mobil Exploration and Producing in NYC. He served as Mobil’s general counsel in New Zealand during the government’s deregulation of the oil industry, general counsel in Japan, and later general counsel for the greater China region in Hong Kong during the changeover from British to Chinese rule. In Virginia, he managed Mobil’s Environmental Litigation and Compliance, and also worked in ExxonMobil Lubricants and Specialties, Fuels Marketing and Global Services. <BR><BR>In his spare time, Charles enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the world and restoring the home and gardens of Ellwood, his historic home near Leesburg, VA.<BR><BR>Charles is best remembered by his friends and colleagues for his unassuming character, inner strength and overwhelming compassion.
